Russian Conservation News
For nearly fifteen years, Russian Conservation News (RCN) has provided a forum for Russians and Americans interested in supporting the “protected areas” of Eurasia—unique natural habitats of global significance for preserving endangered species and combating global warming. This quarterly journal has been a testimony to the enduring strength of grassroots collaboration between Russian and American environmentalists through the ups and downs of politics. In 2008, American Councils took over the editorship of RCN, and developed it into a bilingual internet-based journal. Contributions to RCN permit us to educate a new generation of Eurasians on the importance of preserving the environment, and to begin planning for an exchange program for young people interested in working in the conservation field.
Why should Americans care? Because these habitats are important to all of us, wherever we live. Eurasia’s wild areas are facing new pressures on an unprecedented scale. The global trade in timber, endangered species products, fish, minerals, natural gas and petroleum is feeding a great hunger for resources in Russia and around the world. As one of RCN’s Russian editors expressed it: “There are no borders for environmental issues. We live on one planet. We share it. We are all responsible for it. Our planet is not big and needs us all to protect it.”
